Los Angeles witnessed a similarly large drop in availability from well beyond 35 percent to levels barely more than 20 percent.

The survey found colocation providers are responding to the drastic need for more space by expanding facilities and building new data centers around the world. However, the pace of expansion is not as fast as the rising demand, creating a sense of urgency around data center projects. TeleGeography analyst, Jon Hjembo, explained that the need for more colocation space is creating an environment where data center expansion will likely continue at a rapid pace moving forward.

“It’s unlikely that the pace of expansion will slow anytime soon. While operators are adding capacity, vacancy rates in a number of metro markets we surveyed remain under 25 percent,” said Hjembo.

Equinix is among the companies expanding their data center offerings in light of rising demands around the industry. The company recently announced plans to build its third data center in Seattle. While the facility is not designed exclusively as a colocation center, it is being built to provide the interconnections needed to support colocation efforts at Equinix’s other data centers in the region.
